Knitter's Review
December 1, 2005

the last clover flower and a lock of border leicester fiberWelcome back! I hope you had a good break.

Mine was extra special. On Thanksgiving day, my brother and his wife welcomed their first baby.

As a knitter and doting auntie, I immediately grabbed yarn and needles to clothe this beautiful baby boy in his first handknit. (Personal superstition forbids me from knitting for a baby until after it is born.)

But which yarn would I use? Because this was going to new parents who'd likely have their hands full, I couldn't use a yarn that required handwashing.

With a heavy sigh, I passed on a supersoft alpaca/cashmere handwash-only yarn that's been tempting me since I first touched it. The yarn may be extravagant, but the price isn't.

That's because it's from Knit Picks. It's called Ambrosia, and I review it this week.

(As for the baby blanket, I chose Rowan Cashsoft and cast off the last stitch just a few hours before writing this!)

In the Boutique: Wear Your Heart on Your Sweater
What do you get the knitter who has everything? Jewelry, of course! Our new handmade sterling silver sweater pin was designed specifically to fit through the loops of handknits without piercing the yarn. At the pin's very center sits a sweet, simple heart.

Year-End Fundraising Project
The arrival of December means it's time for our annual fundraiser for the Heifer Foundation.

This innovative nonprofit group helps families in more than 100 countries move toward self-sufficiency by giving them breeding livestock. Families spend a year in training and agree to pass on the first female animal offspring and their own know-how to other needy families—in essence, the gift of one animal helps transform an entire community.

Over the past three years we have collected thousands of dollars for Heifer, which has translated into dozens of sheep to deserving families around the world.

If you're interested in helping and are in a position to contribute this year, you can send a check or money order (payable to Heifer International), in whatever amount you can afford, to:
